Character's Nicknames [if applicable]: Gem
Nationality/Heritage/Species: Human, Scottish.
Occupation: Doctor for Torchwood 2

PB + Image: Kandyse Mcclure
Personality [include strengths and weaknesses. Detail required]:
Gemma is academically brilliant, and socially inept. If you only saw her performing surgery, or patching up a team-mate, you'd find her calm, collected and completely professional. But if you struck up a conversation with her at a bar, you'd probably think she was hyper-active and maybe a tad insane.
Basically, Gemma is the polar opposite of a skeptic. She believes everything: crop circles, Big Foot, alien abductions, JFK assassination conspiracy theories, astrology...everything. She spends most of her free time in on-line forums, debating who killed JFK and why aliens seem to have a predilection for mutilating cattle.
Despite a more than healthy mistrust for the government, on a person-to-person basis, Gemma is a trusting soul that always wants to see the best in people. She's a happy-go-lucky person, who strives to look for the bright side of any situation.
Personal History [brief outline]:
Gemma was born and raised in Glasgow, with mother who was a Professor of Biology, and a father who wrote books. Gemma was very close to her father, and his death when Gemma was a teenage drove her to embracing New Age beliefs and conspiracy theories, his former passions.
Gemma's father was also the driving force for her going to medical school. He himself had wanted to be a doctor, but never quite had the grades for it. Gemma excelled in medicine, even though she had no great passion for it, and graduated at the top of her class.
Gemma was recruited by Torchwood One soon after her residency. Due to mistrust of the government and all related entities, she was very wary of taking the offer. But in the end, her curiosity (as well as her fear of retcon) won out, and she joined. It soon became clear that Gemma didn't exactly fit in at the London base. The higher-ups were at a loss with what to do with her. She was a brilliant doctor, and they didn't want to lose her as an asset, but they found her awkwardness, and unwillingness to take commands without questioning them to be too much to deal with. Eventually, they pawned her off on Torchwood 2, hoping she'd be a better fit with Archie's band of misfits.
Scenario #1 [response must be 100+ words. Be creative.]:
Gemma was enjoying a rare morning off in her favorite coffee shop. She was sipping a latte, and having a lively on-line debate with some idiot somewhere in the middle of America who kept insisting it was the Israel's who had killed John F. Kennedy.
Gemma couldn't believe how stupid people could be sometimes. Anyone with half a brain should be able to tell that Kennedy had been killed by a powerful collation between the CIA and the Mafia (under the influence of the purple-skinned people of the planet Elphenia, naturally). She let out a sigh. People could just be so deluded sometimes.
She had just finished drafting a rather lengthy response to this effect when a man passing back stumbled, spilling his coffee all over her. Gwen leapt to her feet, angry at the incident, but pleased that her laptop had been spared any damage.
"Too late, you Elphenian bastard," Gemma said triumphantly as she hit the 'post' button, closed her laptop and left the cafe, leaving a very confused man in her wake.
Scenario #2 [response must be 100+ words. Be creative.]:
Gemma was thrilled. Here was a kindred spirit! Someone who knew about Torchwood, and wasn't willing to take no for an answer. If he knew about Torchwood, who knew what other knowledge he might have. She grabbed his wrist, not even noticing his surprised protests, and dragged him into a nearby pub.
She sat him down in corner booth, and began peppering him with questions, but hardly leaving room for him to answer. "So, how'd you find out about us exactly? Was it the internet? I know we have some problems with the whole keeping a secret thing. There's actually tons of sites dedicated to Torchwood if you know where to look. And all the best conspiracy forums have threads dedicated to us. Is that where you found out? Do you frequent the forums? Which ones? I'm usually on Fight the Future, but Truths R Us has some great people too, do you hang out there? What's your handle? We might have met there before, actually. I know, I know, it's kinda crappy for me to be on there and not tell everyone exactly what I know and what I do, but believe me, it'd just led to problems for everyone, and I do tell people things when I can do so without endangering anyone."
She looked at him, wondering why he was just sitting there staring at her liek that. "Well, come on, come on. Tell me what you know!"
It was going to be a great night, Gemma could tell.
It was a real shame she'd have slip ret-con in his beer later.
