Rose stood in the large lab that served as the testing site for some of Torchwood's more dangerous experiments. Punching through dimensions was not easy work. Not that Rose had been expecting it to be easy. After all, The Doctor had used the power of a supernova just to get a message to her. Actually taking a person through? Well, it was next to impossible.
But one thing that her travels with the Doctor had taught her was that next to impossible was NOT the same as impossible. Torchwood had been working on ideas similar to a dimension cannon, so when she had started working for Torchwood, she'd made it her pet project.
Now, after a hell of a lot of false starts, they finally had something that seemed promising. And Rose was going to be the one to test it out. She knew that Pete would throw a fit if he knew she was using something so potentially dangerous. But she didn't want anyone on her team taking a risk she wasn't willing to take herself. And besides, she really wanted to get back to her own dimension. She really wanted to find the Doctor.
"Everything is ready."
Rose turned to see Mike, one of the research team looking at her expectantly. Rose took a deep breath and stepped into the circle of cameras and other equipment that would monitor the test. She hiked the dimension cannon unto her shoulder and nodded.
"Cannon 39.8. Test 1," she said steadily. Nodded once more to her team, she pulled the trigger.
Instantly, everything around her went a blinding white. She felt a strange pulling sensation in her chest, then a feeling of falling. Then, just as quickly as it started, everything stopped. She blinked, looking around her carefully. She wasn't sure yet if she had changed dimensions, but she had certainly moved. She appeared to be in a deserted alleyway. Luckily, no one had seen her entrance. Wanting to avoid the attention it might bring her, she quickly dismantled the cannon, fitting it into the carrying case slung on her arm.
She stepped out into the main street. It certainly looked like London. A glance at the sky revealed no zeppelins, that was a good sign. She began to let herself believe that maybe she had gotten home.
