Personality [include strengths and weaknesses. Detail required]:
Samantha is currently pretty lost. Thrown more than 50 years into the past during an incident with an alien artifact, she is currently trying to get used to a world that's not the one she knows. She's pretty angry about the entire situation, worried that she'll never get back home, and terrified about screwing up the timeline.
What she was like in 2061
Well of above average intelligence, Sam's real strength lies in her ability to read people and situations. She can be something of a chameleon, changing her personality drastically to fit in to any given information. While this has made her successful at her job, it can make personal relationships rather difficult. Since most of her days are spent lying to people, it has become something of a habit.
Because she's done a great deal of undercover/infiltration work, Sam is very protective of her real self, and it can be difficult to get to know her. She's got a sharp wit and a huge sarcastic streak that can sometimes be mistaken for cruelty. She's never afraid to back down from a fight or argument, even when she should. Despite this, she does care deeply for her teammates, it's just not always easy for her to show it.
Since the death of Liam, her former team leader (and unknown to the rest of the team, her former lover), Sam has thrown herself into her work even more than before. Given Torchwood's tendency to discourage outside relationships, and the fact that her particular team is contently on the move, Samantha has no life outside of the job.
Personal History [brief outline]:
Samantha "Sam" Wells was born on in of the Lunar Colonies to British ex-pat parents, but moved to California at a young age. She had a pretty normal childhood, where she did well in school and had a fair amount of friends even if she was something of a geek. Even as a child, she was always interested in the occult, the paranormal and supernatural. Until joining Torchwood she was close to her parents. However the lies she has to tell them now puts something of a strain on their relationship.
Sam graduated from college with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Classical History. She was planning on going to graduate school, but during a trip to Europe the summer after her graduation, she decided to check out some sites of supposed supernatural occurrences. During her explorations she kept hearing one word, Torchwood.
Sam became a little obsessed. When she discovered a pattern in a series of "hauntings" she began checking them out, hoping to find out more about the organization, not knowing that Torchwood, seeing her as a common factor in the incidents and believing her to be a cause rather than an observer, were watching her as well. When Torchwood finally confronted her, and were about to take her in, the real -alien- threat was revealed. Sam held her own in helping the team defeat it. She was offered a job with Torchwood, and was assigned to Torchwood Four.
Sam quickly took to Field Operations especially infiltration and information retrieval. She was a highly valued member of the team, though the only person she was really close to was the team's then leader, Liam Anders. When Liam was killed during a mission gone-wrong, Samantha took charge, successfully extricated the rest of the team from the mess, and has been acting as de-facto team leader ever since.
In 2061, her team came across an unknown alien artifact. When attempting to run some tests on it, there was a incident, and Samantha was thrown back in time. Now in the current timeline, she's unsure of her next move. Sure she'll not be able to find TW4, considering they are always on the move, Samantha decides to try to find TW3 instead, hoping they'll be able to send her back to her own time.
Scenario #2 [response must be 100+ words. Be creative.]:
Samantha Wells walked quickly down the street toward the hotel where the rest of her team was currently holed-up. She was carrying a box of doughnuts in one hand and a cardboard carrier filled with cups of coffee in the other. It was cold day, and with the wind it was downright freezing. She was beginning to wish she had buttoned up her coat before leaving the coffee shop, as she now didn't have her hands free to do it. She hunched her shoulders against the wind and started to walk faster.
The tradition of doughnuts and coffee the morning after a successful mission had been started by Liam. Frankly, she found the whole idea rather silly. But the one time she had brought it up, he had given her a rather long lecture about team bonding and good leadership and the like. So now, she was the one who got the doughnuts. She couldn't be the kind of warm and friendly leader that Liam had been. But this one little thing tradition she could cary on.
"Excuse me!"
At first she ignored the call coming from behind her, but as the man continued to call out, she glanced over her shoulder and realized that he was talking to her. He was older than her, probably in his mid-30s and she was quite sure that she had never seen him before in her life.
She pasted on a false smile. "Yes?" she asked when the man approached.
"I want to talk to you about Torchwood."
Sam froze, the smile still stuck on her face. "I'm sorry?"
The look in the man's eyes worried her. She had met people obsessed with Torchwood before. People who had somehow caught a whiff of something and doggedly chased after it. Heck, she had been one of those people. Most of them were the same types who became obsessed with UFOs and were convinced that aliens were mutilating cattle in rural Montana. Nutcases, really. This man was different. He looked like he really knew something, and he wasn't put off by her pretending otherwise.
She looked him up and down, quickly weighing her options and coming to a decision.
"Not here," she said softly, and nodded in the direction of a nearby alley and headed down it, the man following after her.
----
One minute and fifteen seconds later, Samantha stepped out of the alleyway, brushing off her hands. With luck the man would wake up before one of the city's less savory types found him. Then again, if he didn't, it gave her one less thing to worry about done the line.
She was a little disappointed that the doughnuts and coffee had been lost in the struggle. There wouldn't be time to get new ones either. Perhaps they could get something at the airport. Now was definitely time to leave town.
