How did you hear about us?: Advert
Character Name: Captain Jack Harkness
Character Gender: Male
Character Age/Birthdate [if unknown, make it up appropriately]:
Character's Nicknames [if applicable]: Jack, Captain, Harkness, Sir, Face of Boe
Nationality/Heritage/Species: Boeshane Penisula/Human
Occupation: Commander of Torchwood’s Cardiff hub
Sexuality: Pansexual
Personality [include strengths and weaknesses. Detail required]: Jack has a strong, type A personality. He is witty, intelligent, flirty, and generally good natured. He can sometimes behave rather cockily. Although he gives off the air of being perfectly open he is, in fact, very guarded and hides himself behind the wall of his self assuredness and light hearted banter. Jack is touchy about his past and very rarely shares or answers questions about it.
He is a soul weary man and there are times when the loneliness of immortality ways heavily on his shoulders and he can feel it weighing him down. His inability to stay dead sometimes makes him feel less human and he needs his teammates to remind him of the fact that he is human, no matter how many times his reset button is hit. As a leader he is often faced with the task of making the difficult and unpopular choice even at the risk of alienating himself.
Although the lines can sometime become blurred, Jack does have a strong moral code that he tries very hard to live up to. His biggest weaknesses are without a doubt the people he cares about, The Doctor and Ianto Jones being foremost on that list. He would give his life many times over to save the people close to him, as well as the world at large and has, in point of fact, done just that.
Personal History [if known, brief outline]: The man now known as Captain Jack Harkness was born on the Boeshane Penisula in the 51st century of the planet Earth. From what is known of that time he had a relatively normal childhood with two well functioning parents and a younger Brother [known only as Gray]. When he was still a boy his home was attached by as yet unnamed alien beings. During the attack his bother was taken and his father, Franklin, was killed leaving young Jack with his mother.
Some years later, Jack joined up with the Time Agency becoming a Time Agent. While in the employ of the Time Agency Jack’s activity are mostly unknown, however, we do know that at the end of his stint Jack was a part of or stumbled onto something that the Agency wanted hidden and they removed two years worth of memory from his brain.
Shortly thereafter Jack became a conman, using his Time Agent training to survive as best he could. During one planned con he crashed an alien ambulance in the middle of War torn London during the Blitz. It was there that Jack first met the Doctor and Rose Tyler.
After helping to stop the events that he himself has inadvertently set into motion, The Doctor took him onboard the TARDIS as a traveling companion. Together He, The Doctor and Rose Tyler had many adventures and became very close.
Then came Satellite 5 and the Daleks. Jack led a small group of humans in a vain attempt against the Dalek forces and was killed. Jack Harkness was dead.
At least that’s what he’d thought. Unbeknownst to Jack, Rose had looked into the heart of the TARDIS, gathering into herself the powers of time and space, wiped the Daleks from existence and brought him back to life. When he woke, he found only dust where there had once been Daleks. He ran for the TARDIS only to find that he had been left behind.
Jack was able to make his escape from Satellite 5 using his Vortex Manipulator, a standard issue for all Time Agents, and found himself in 1869. With his Vortex Manipulator no longer working, Jack was forced to remain in the timeline and wait and hope for The Doctor to turn up.
Somewhere between 1869 and 1901 Jack discovered his inability to stay dead and it was this discovery, and his talk of The Doctor, that lead to his capture by Torchwood. During his capture Jack is convinced to join up with Torchwood as a freelance agent working with them over the decades until he is finally assigned to Torchwood Four. In 1999 Jack assumes command of Torchwood Four after returning to the Hub from a mission and finding the entire team dead at the hands of their Leader Alex Hopkins, who then kills himself.
After severing ties with Torchwood One in London Jack recuirts, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Suzie Costello, Ianto Jones and eventually, Gwen Cooper and embarks on his task to make Torchwood something good for all man-kind.
Scenario #1 [response must be 150+ words. Be creative.]:
He had known she was going to run into him, he’d seen it coming, and yet he hadn’t moved himself to avoid her, (even though his wet and now slightly singed lower abdomen wished he had). The opportunity had just been too perfect to pass up. He had watched as her red hair flounced up and down around her shoulders as she scurried around the people on the crowded sidewalk, a stack of files and paperwork gripped tightly to her chest and a paper cup hanging precariously from her teeth.
She was just steps from him when a tall man in a stark black suit brushed past her, jousting her arm and she tilted right, over corrected and slammed forward. Right into his chest. She let out a surprised yap, the cup falling from her lips, dumping the hot liquid over his shirt and coming to rest under foot. Jack raised his arms, wrapping them around her, to steady her before she could bounce backward and into someone else.
He nearly laughed as she stared up at him with wide green eyes and tried to find her words of apology. Instead he just flashed her a blinding smile, he hands moving to cup her upper arms for a brief, reassuring squeeze.
“It’s alright.” He told her, smile still firmly in place, “Its only coffee, no harm done.”
She merely continued to stare at him like a deer caught in the headlights for a moment before giving a meek smile and questioning whether or not he was certain.
“Yeah, my drycleaner thanks you. I haven’t been giving him nearly enough business lately.” He chuckled, he could almost hear Ianto’s insistence that he wasn’t nearly as funny as he thought he was. “Are you alright?”
She nodded quickly and twisted her wrist awkward angles, trying to see the time while not displacing the files in her arms.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jack apologized and step aside, “I should let you get going, looks like you might be in a hurry. Have a nice day.”
She thanked him and apologized again for the coffee and then shuffled off down the sidewalk. His grin grew impossibly large across his face as he walked away in the opposite direction, the tails of his greatcoat flaring out in his wake. He reached up to the blue-toothed com in his ear and tapped it on.
“Toshiko, the tag is live. Let me know when you have a fixed location, I need to change my shirt.”
Scenario #2 [response must be 150+ words. Be creative and detailed.]:
Jack’s first reaction to the man was to ignore him, when that failed he resorted to feigning ignorance and making a B-line for a somewhat less populated area. The man, Mike as he’d called himself, followed, yapping at his heels like an over stimulated terrier. Jack kept one eye on Mike and the other on the people around them. He had to be sure that nobody was paying any attention to the man ranting in hisses at him as they walked.
When Mike stopped moving suddenly Jack felt a twinge of apprehension clutch at his chest, it was still a little too populated to resort to violence. He too discontinued his forward momentum and turned around with a sigh and folded his arms over his chest.
“What?”
Mike began to ramble on about what he knew, telling Jack that he wanted his help but wouldn’t say what with. He said that if Jack didn’t help, if he didn’t tell him the truth, he was going to the papers. He would tell the entire world, anyone who would listen, all about Torchwood. In short, he would cause as much trouble as he could.
Jack held up his hands in a gesture of surrender.
“Look, let me buy you a drink, some place with people, where you’ll feel secure and we’ll talk this out like reasonable men.” He held out his hand, “Deal?”
As they started walking again, toward the bar Mike had named Jack fingered the retcon capsules in his pocket. He hoped that two would do the job faster than normal, he really had far more important place to be right now.
